The Duomo – Filippo Brunelleschi

Florence Cathedral was designed and built by Arnolfo di Cambio. However, its most recognizable and prominent feature, it’s dome (or “the duomo”) was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.

The duomo is an amazing feat of architecture even by today’s standards. It is made of bricks and is laid out in such a way as to require no scaffolding. The result is a fluid and beautiful design.

Additionally, the look of the duomo was the first to break away from Gothic tradition in formal architecture during the Renaissance. Brunelleschi was a true innovator, genius and artist.
